| What do parents do with 8-11 year olds when their kids are too talented or competitive for general rec leagues, but not ready to specialize for a year-round single sport? We don’t want to go all in on club and travel teams that cost a fortune and require a commitment that would prevent multi-sport participation. Is anyone else trying to get a slightly more competitive experience for soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, and baseball in the spring? |

First, you need to change your mindset. No kid is “too talented” for rec. But the truth is by age 11, most talented kids really are doing travel around here.
But what you’re looking for does exist, depending on where you live. Arlington has ADP for soccer, which is travel lite. And most baseball teams around here have summer All Stars. You can also do regular private or group lessons in the sport so your kid gets better without a year-round commitment. |
| Just do the "travel" option of your Rec program. It's not travel and it's affordable comparatively speaking to club |

Up until high school years you do a variety of things IF the kid is able to handle things academically and emotionally.
Around 14 or so (8th grade/9th grade) decisions may be needed to focus more specifically. High school classes will take more time, your kid’s athletic status compared to peers will be pretty set, high school athletic options expand again, or they may want to shift non-academic focuses to other activities. |
