LCPS parents - Which HS?

We are currently renting and are planning to move to a good high school for our first child. Can you please share your experiences with the high schools your kids are currently enrolled in, including details about the environment, teaching quality, grades, and any other relevant aspects?

For us, a good high school is one where teachers effectively teach the class and cover the required syllabus. Additionally, the administration should take prompt action on bad behavior, ensuring that kids feel safe going to school.

Dominion is a good HS, with a great principal who has been with the school since its opening. Students love him and he knows them all by name.

All of the Loudoun high school are pretty equivalent tbh. If your kid is very competitively athletic, perhaps Independence. If they’re very into theatre, Rock Ridge has one of the greatest theatre programs in the country. Other than that, everything else comes out in the wash.

The discipline matrix defined by LCPS makes addressing bad behavior quite difficult. Very high threshold for true discipline. So, you will not find a principal who throws the book at kids anywhere in the county- many of the policies are designed to make that very difficult to do.

Thats a hard place to be in for the administrative staff and teachers. Do kids get into fights at school?

Of course, it’s high school. There’s no high school in this country where fights don’t happen. You can only be suspended for fighting if someone is physically hurt though.
