Metro Center Station

I know last week's metro brawl started at the Gallery Place/Chinatown station and that there was a knife fight near that stop last week as well. So just wondering if it is safe to walk around near the Metro Center station after dark at around 9pm? Thanks.

Yes it's fine. Don't get paranoid. There's nothing fun for teenagers to do at Metro Center vs Chinatown at that time of night. Just keep your head about you and look like you know what you're doing and you'll be fine.

Thanks!

I read an article in Wash Post this weekend about how Gallery Place is the new hangout for teens, especially in summer. As a result, the stores have beefed up security outside and there is a big police presence. The article made it sound like the vast majority of the "hijinks" that goes on, if I can borrow a phrase from everyone's grandparents, is typical annoying teen stuff (being loud, running, making fun of each other, heckling people) and not anything dangerous for the most part.

Interesting article. Makes me realize how different my childhood was growing up in the suburbs of a much smaller city.

Yeah, the crowds of teenagers at Gallery Place are annoying but I never see them around Metro Center. Pp is right. It's not a big hangout. I wouldn't worry.

PP again. I should add that I have been through Metro Center at night pretty regularly and have personal experience of this.

I've been walking around Metro Place at night for years, though there are definitely streets that are less well-lit and less well-trafficked than others. Still, have never had a problem. (And I've felt a bit unsafe a couple times near Gallery Place at night, so I know I'm not totally fearless.) I usually try to avoid changing lines in the off-peak hours, which means I've done quite a bit of walking to/from orange line stations. My only caution is that it's easy to get turned around, given how many exits there are from the metro station - make sure you know where you're going or you could wander around a bit. I always use the 11th & G exit for that reason.
