My dc is starting at a school where horse therapy is a part of the program (we are not local). During the tour, the teacher said that they have helmets available for use (they are required) but that seems kind of...gross...it's on the supply list anyways.
Keeping in mind that I know pretty much nothing about horses/riding, what might be a decent, inexpensive helmet? What is a good size for a 9yo? Is this something to buy new or is used ok? It's a specific helmet, right, not like a bike helmet? Thanks for advice! |
| Read up on the safety ratings, but the TuffRider starter helmet is probably best on price. They sell it on Amazon. |

If you can go have it fitted in person. They can adjust the straps and make sure it fits well. Which one they like depends on head shape and preferences.

Thank you for the responses! Even the four word one I did notice the TuffRider ones while googling.

Yes, it has to be a horse riding helmet, not a bike helmet. We bought a Trexel one from Chewy and it has some extra pads you can add to adjust fit. I would not buy used - just like car seats, they are supposed to be replaced after a certain time or after a bad impact. Plus the whole point of having your own is to not feel gross about it.
You can Google how to fit them but basically: 1. Sits level across the forehead, not tipped up. 2. The Y part of the chin strap goes on either side of the ears. 3. Helmet should not move when your kid vigorously nods or shakes head. |
| DC has troxel riding helmet ( age 11 and wears size S helmet, we originally ordered medium but it’s too big so we kept the medium to use later and ordered S), also has tuffrider safety vest, boots and riding pants. DC does minimum riding so those are good enough. |
