Schoology access from outside the US

Anonymous
Has anyone tried accessing Schoology while traveling internationally? The FCPS website isn't exactly clear on whether it will work.

It might not. You’d be best to try to contact the school or gatehouse. It definitely gets tricky outside of the US.

As a teacher, I seen scenarios where it has and has not worked. It’s hard to predict.

It generally doesn't work for students. One of my students left the county suddenly and the first we heard from them was an email saying they couldn't access it.

OP here. Thanks for the info. Sounds like "maybe" is the best we'll get until we're there and can try it. We did ask the teacher but she wasn't sure, only knew about meeting to authorize Zoom for the specific country - no insight on getting coursework through Schoology.

This is direct from the employee hub- I would not plan on having Schoology access while traveling internationally.

“ Students may continue to use Google Apps outside the United States, but all other student and parent systems are blocked from international access.”

Anyone tried using a VPN routed through US.

My kid did online algebra over the summer.

For around a week, we were travelling in the UK.

My kid was able to access the class there. But I think we had to submit something in writing to the online coordinator to let them know we would be travelling and accessing the class form an overseas IP.

Ask the teacher what the steps are to be allowed to do this.

Reupping this. Anyone tried access via VPN? We will need access from outside the US for travel we are contemplating this winter. Wondering what we need to do to make sure daughter is keeping up with the work while out of the country.

I hope you aren’t teaching English.

Easy. Don’t plan international trips during school days.

We have, and it has worked. I used my work VPN, although that shouldn't make any difference.

Asking anyone at FCPS to spend one second thinking about this self-created problem is completely obnoxious. You want to travel during school days, that's your problem.

It feels unnecessary to chastise a parent for simply asking a question. Families aren’t always away on international vacations during the school year—sometimes circumstances arise that require them to be elsewhere for a short time. In those cases, the student is often trying to be responsible by keeping up with their work without asking for extra help. That kind of work ethic is exactly what we should encourage in our kids, not criticize them or their families for.
