What to do about cockroaches

Anonymous
Around a month ago we found two cockroaches in our bedroom. Only thing I can think of is we installed a new toilet in the master bathroom and the toilet was sitting in the garage for a month. We killed them and didn’t see a cockroach again until today - also upstairs. Now I am freaked out. Does that mean we have a cockroach infestation? And if so what should I do about it?

Little ones or the really big ones--require different approaches

These are the ones that come from outside so thankfully not the kind that breed inside. They like to come up through drains so keep toilet lids closed and sink drains closes when not in use

Do you leave windows open when the weather is nice? We live in a heavily wooded area and seem to get the occasional one inside our house once the weather warms and we have the windows and patio sliding door open (with screens, but still). Also, my kids sometimes (often?) accidentally leave the door open. Could this be your scenario too? It is disturbing, but does not mean you have an infestation. It couldn’t hurt to have a reputable pest control company out to do an assessment. Just be aware that these companies tend to prey on fearful customers so read reviews carefully before selecting one so you don’t fall victim to a bunch of expensive services you don’t need.

Thanks to you both! We sometimes do but downstairs not upstairs. We live in a townhouse so surprised to see them upstairs.

Who are they? Also is it safe to get an exterminator if you have young kids in the house?

Put some sticky traps down and monitor. May have been a one off thing (esp if it was a month ago).

We have a friend whose SFH is clutter free, minimalistic and clean. They have a housekeeper who comes in twice a month too. Yet we saw a roach at their house. It has to be from the sewage or outside.

Our house is kind of messy and kids never pick up after themselves and we had roaches too. I followed the advice someone in this forum gave and tried Advion gel before calling the exterminator and it actually worked. The nasty little buggers were gone in 2 weeks. It was disgusting 2 weeks with these just dropping dead everywhere. There is a reddit forum on roaches and the advice there is to use Advion and Alpine WSG in combination (apparently if there are eggs that hatch they will come back in 6 months and we need both kinds of these chemicals to kill them all). I will update if these come back in a few months. For now we used just half a syringe for the kitchen and family room floors where we kept seeing them and they are gone.

Sauté in ghee with garlic and a splash of better quality olive oil, serve over arugula with a good cabernets or merlot.

Burn the house down.

Thanks everyone. I will try those traps and see. The funny thing about all of this is I have a back injury and my husband is dealing with major health issues. So we actually are having our cleaners come three times a week to help with laundry and light cleaning as well. So our house is super neat and organized.

The big ones crawled in from somewhere. You need to seal gaps. It's not a matter of cleanliness - they just wandered inside.

I think that's what an exterminator would use.

We called an exterminator, and he put gel in places that weren't accessible to kids and pets. I think monthly is overkill. We had it done once a couple of years ago, and haven't seen live cockroaches since (once in a blue moon I see a dead one). If I started to see live ones, I'd call and have them come back or try the Advion/Alpine gel.
