Are these easy teams to make if you have never played field hockey?

Depends on the school. DCs high school has freshman, JV and V and freshman do not make V and very rarely make JV.

Similar in MOCO. Some schools will take anyone for JV or even varsity. Other schools generally only take kids who already play with a club, including for JV.

My DD goes to a MCPS school that isn’t full of club players. She started playing field hockey in 9th and loves it. She was on the varsity team since the school didn’t have enough interest to field 2 teams.
She picked it up very quickly and made the all star team in 11th.
