| how does this work. i have a 5th grader and thinking ahead... |
| Whats the question? St johns players do not have to play for achilles [technically] |
| Plenty (most) of achilles players do not go to SJC. |
| So are you asking because of the MLS Next rule? If so, technically they’re not supposed to play for their high school team without a waiver, which has to prove they have a scholarship to play soccer for their high school and will forgo the club fall season. However, it seems like at St. John’s if the player is from Achilles somehow they’re able to do both? I do know the safest route to play both club and high school is to do ECNL rather than MLS Next. |
| Does it help to play for Achilles to get into St Johns? |
A scholarship is not needed for a waiver (although often the case), just that a students acceptance is contingent on playing soccer for the high school. I think the waiver allows the player to play both high school and club at the same time, no need to waive any club season. |
If you are on the lower end of St. John’s requirements to get in but ur a baller on an Achilles MLSNext team, I’m sure you’ll know the coach well enough to ask them to put in a good word for ur kid that can help. But I don’t think playing for Achilles will make much difference and I think that’s applicable for most sports. Most athletes getting into private schools are usually very, very good and are either recruited or have relationships with the school coaches so asking for help with admission is easy. |
Yes, 100%. And attend any clinics or additional trainings the coach offers. He is one of the worst pay-to-play coaches in this area. |
| Not sure why you would say the Achilles coach is "pay to play," which I interpret to mean that he favors players who pay for the extras. While he offers various technical training sessions and a summer camp, many (perhaps most?) of the starters who get the most playing time don't pay for and go to those sessions. And the overlap between SJC team and Achilles is pretty minimal. |
| My kid was on Achilles and it didn't help us get in. We were not on MLS next. Not sure these coaches have that kind of pull. May be the opposite affect if you know what I mean. |
As a PP said above, unless ur a great player alrdy, it won’t do much for a kid that didn’t already have the grades HSPT scores and grades to get in. |
| My kid had ok grades and played on the B team and didn’t get in even after we asked for a letter of recommendation. |
Clown post. |
How about focus on academics as passionately as soccer and POOF, DC can do both. |
They give away A's and B's so easily in school these days, kids just need to show up and turn in most of their homework. Excelling at soccer is much harder. |
