We finally decided to name our baby boy Austin. Now, onto the middle name. We want to use a family name, but we can't decide which one to choose. For our daughter, we used the name Theresa, which is a special name in my family.
Here are the options we're considering: - Austin George (my dad's first name) - Austin Albert (my dad's middle name) - Austin David (my husband's middle name and FIL's first name) - Austin Howard (my maiden name) - Austin Jude (to honor my MIL Judy) Which one do you like the best? Should we choose a name from his family this time to be fair? Let me know your thoughts. I’m stressing over this. I don’t want any hurt feelings, but I know there probably will be. |
What about "James" Other wise I like "Albert" has a nice flow--the others are clunky |
| Agree with PP. Austin Albert flows nicely, the rest don't. Personally I only use honor names for deceased family members, but if there's some sort of expectation in your husband's family, David or Jude sound okay IMO. |
| I think Austin sounds better as a middle name in every example you gave. It's also trendy, and the other names are less so, except maybe Jude. |
| Austin Howard |
| I like Austin Jude. And you can call him AJ if you want |
| Austin Jude or Austin David |
|
I like Austin George.
However to be fair, I'd go with Austin Howard. As long as the three initials work well together. Then the kid has his own name, a name from mom's family, and a name from dad's family. That's nicely blended. In our family, the only family name that has become a tradition was a lady's surname/maiden name in the mid-1850s. |

If the last name is your husband’s family name I wouldn’t worry about fairness, and I am Jewish and would only name based on deceased names.
I like the AJ nickname. |
| Honestly I don’t like any of those options. And I love the name Austin. I just think those combos all seem weird. |
| Austin James |

I think that if you are using your DH's last name, then using middle names from your family is fair, unless there's a specific person your DH wants to honor.
I'd start with that question -- who do we want to honor. If the answer is your Dad, then narrow it down to his first, middle and last names. Of the 3, I like Howard the best, and I also like that it honors you. |
+1. |
Agreed |
| Texas. Or Boston. Austin Boston. |
