For a long time: Karel the Robot (book) for decades used to be where you would learn strong fundamentals.

Stanford updated/modernized it at: https://compedu.stanford.edu/karel-reader/docs/python/en/intro.html

What to avoid are: coding tutors/camps/books that asks you to type what you see and some how you built it without understanding it. Becomes a dull typing course.

What you want is an "ah ha" where your 9th grader can say "Oh now I can do this".
