I’ve been to only MV of the locations. How similar are the Hampton’s to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard? |
Seems to me there'd be more to do in the Hamptons.
All those places are full of rich snobs, though and not exactly catered to tourists. But that may be what you're looking for. |
Louder. |
MV is less snobby than ACK and Hamptons. |
I love them all! You're able to get around more in the Hamptons without worrying about a ferry. |
The one time I was in the Hamptons I was surprised how much people were still dressed like they were in NYC -- lots of all black, etc. The vibe is not like that on MV (or -- I assume -- Nantucket). |
The Hamptons crowd is coming from NYC so stylish, sophisticated, fashionable, skinny. If that is not you then you won’t fit in.. |
Martha’s Vineyard caters to tourists. |
Reviving this instead of starting a new thread....
Which would you visit for a week in August? We're on the east coast and usually go to the beaches in Florida or abroad but are looking to stay in the US and do something we haven't done before next summer. We've got 3 teenagers. We're looking for casual elegance, we've done the Miami Beach thing. |
Martha's Vineyard is arguably the most diverse -- it has a large (rich) African-American population in the summer. But many of the most desirable beaches are private, and it's large, so you need a car. But it's also arguably the least snobby--there are a lot of very nice, normal people who live there year-round. If you go in late August, there's a huge Agricultural Fair with ride and games etc. Our teens love it.
Nantucket is very small, very white, and very rich. |
Eh. Maybe some of them. |
Less snobby? That's like saying Bill Gates is less wealthy compared to Bezos and Musk. |
Much easier to get to MV than the Hamptons from DC. Direct flights from DCA. I personally really dislike the “rich New Yorker” crowd and prefer the “rich New England” crowd in MV as well. |
The Hamptons are very nice in the winter and off-season, relaxing and not that showy. I don't really know for summer. We did the North Shore instead (dh's family is from LI) |
I think a lot are. They're from NYC & often at the top of whatever their game is. Being rich helps develop that worldly, know-everything sense of sophistication. |
