Do pop stars go deaf?

Do pop starts like Jlo, Madonna, Britney, and Taylor lose their hearing from all of the loud shows?

Taylor Swift just had her 100th show. How is she not losing her hearing after doing shows that are at least 100 decibels for 3.5 hours each time?!

Dave Grohl has said that he can no longer hear the person next to him at a dinner table but he hasn't had a hearing test and is not contemplating hearing aids (at least not yet). Many/most aging rock musicians have hearing loss. Those musicians you listed though use in-ear monitors that may also protect their hearing and may not have the hearing loss that older or less superstar musicians do.

I have family members in music and I have adult-onset hearing loss and started wearing hearing aids in my 20s. So I know a little bit about both subjects.

You can't tell with female performers because their hair often blocks their ears, but their in-ear monitors also function as earplugs.

Here's some in-ear monitors that drop the sound by about 25 decibels for $200. I'm sure the pros have much better options:

I used to go clubbing a lot and always wore foam earplugs that drop the sound by about 30 decibels. I'm glad I did.

Tinnitus is really common in musicians.

I listen to music really loudly, both at home and outside on my headphones, and I just aced my hearing test at 100%, age 54. 🤷‍♂️

This is not the same as at a concert. Concerts are incredibly loud. Saw Taylor Swift last week and had earphones in thr while time. Even when it was over it was loud for 30 min as we exited…more than 70,000 people all moving and talking at one time. The music was still loud with earplugs in.

I think the in-ear things they wear helps protect their hearing.

Huey Lewis has significant hearing loss, he has said.

I went to a ton of converts without protection for my ears and I have hearing loss at 53.

Pete Townsend has very bad hearing loss.

I noticed that Lady Gaga wore a beautiful ear piece that was shaped like a bird. I didn’t know that the ear pieces also worked as ear plugs.

Thanks, all!

Huey Lewis has significant hearing loss, he has said.

He has Ménière’s disease which is unrelated to loud sounds.

AC/DC singer Brian Johnson’s deafness is why they stopped touring. We had tickets to a show right before his announcement but we missed it since we both had H1N1.
