How soon is reasonable to want to paint your rooms a new color?

We bought our house in 2006, and liked the colors the previous owner had so we just kept them. Finally in 2020, like many people, we had time to tackle home projects and painted every single room in our house. We did it ourselves and were finished by late spring/early summer.

Now it's been four years and there are a couple rooms that I'd like to change the color. Dh thinks I'm being unreasonable because "we just painted it." I think four years isn't "just" and since I'm really unhappy with the colors of these two rooms, we should change them.
FWIW, we are hoping to move soon (but no actual plans yet) and part of my reasoning for wanting to change these two rooms is resale value. I think the colors we chose will be very unappealing to a potential buyer.

Do you think four years unreasonable? How often do you paint your interior?

It’s less than $100 and a weekend—just do it! If your dh is like mine he is really saying he doesn’t want to be bothered to do the work, but he wouldn’t care if I did it as long as he didn’t have to be involved. I would do it myself.

There’s no universal rule. If you’re planning to move I’d paint closer to the date so it looks fresh when you list.

If you’re doing it yourself, it’s just the cost of the can of paint. Do one room at the time and see if it’s worth the effort as you go.

I am the painter in the house so I change when I feel like it. I have painted a room twice in a weekend because I wasn’t happy with the color I chose 😀 Do it yourself and tell him to handle dinner for the weekend.

I am also the painter and I do it whenever I want. If it’s one room with doors and a reasonable ceiling height, and you’re not painting the trim, and you’re changing from one light ish color to another? It’s a breeze!

I once painted the bedroom while DH had a long weekend day at the office and he didn’t notice until days later. Zero VOC paint and I had everything back in place.

It isn’t too soon if you are unhappy with the color: and have waited an appropriate time to
see if it grew on you, (which you have).
