Anyone using dash cams?

Watched a few YouTube videos on road rage and insurance fraud. The insurance fraud is worrying. The people doing this will stop on a street, parking lot or even a highway, wait for you to stop and then back into you. If you don’t have a dash cam you’re screwed.

If you’re using one, what’s your experience been? What model do you use?

Been using one for 4 years. I’ve had a couple different models, made by a company called VanTrue. My current model has front and rear cams. The original model only had a front camera.

The first one saved my ass a couple years ago when a woman on a bicycle ran a stop sign in front of me at a 4-way intersection at 38th and Upton street. She hit my car. She tried to tell the cops she stopped and I ran my stop sign and ran into her.

I showed the cops the video and they saw the woman was obviously lying. I wanted them to charge her with lying to a police officer but they wouldn’t.

My insurance went after her for the $3k damage to my car (fender replacement and repaint) and she had a judgement against her but she has refused to pay.

Typical cyclist.

I hear mixed things about the effectiveness of dash cam footage for legal or insurance purposes. I wouldn't rely on it being admissible for like a hit and run (where you're trying to get the license plate off the video). But it might be more useful in a he said/she said type situation.

I bought one about 4 years ago and never needed the footage for anything. A few months ago, it got knocked down and have never gotten around to setting it back up (and don't see much need to). You can probably get a decent one for under $100. But if you install it yourself, the cords can get a little messy. installing a rear camera is a little more involved.

I had been looking into getting a dash cam for a while when I had a car accident. Wish I'd had one in place. If it showed the other vehicle was at fault for speeding through the intersection, I might have been able to sue them for the cost of replacing my well maintained vehicle.

Everyone speeds these days. A dash cam is almost a necessity.

I only drive 5 minutes max and have thought about simply using the extra phone I have. If nothing happens, I'd delete the video. I don't care for the wires everywhere.
I have never needed one. I try very hard not to hit anyone even if it would be their fault. I drive in the city and plenty of other people around to see who is at fault.

You only drive 5 minutes max? That's strange.

My son bought some sort of adapter and has wired two dashcams into the rearview mirrors in a Prius and a Camry so no wires are visible (camera is behind the mirror so the driver doesn't even see it. He figured it out with you tube.

My sister-in-law has forward and rear cameras. The footage for a recent accident and the cop said it changed things. 100% on the other driver.

Mostly, she sends us "can you believe this" videos. Like the guy driving the wrong way on an exit ramp.

I really want the cameras.

Teslas have cameras recording all the time. They also have a sentry mode that alerts you if something happens when you are not near the car (when you get back in). You can then review the camera footage. I think it keeps all the recordings for 30 days.

I want them--the police do nothing and usually don't even ticket anyone in an accident anymore.

We don’t have one but I want one.

A guy rear ended us on the highway and then lied. While I did not have a video camera, the photos I took at the scene proved he was lying.

If I’d not taken photos, his insurance Geico would not have paid. They changed their tune when they saw the photos.

People do cause accidents to try and get the insurance payments….
