Writing SOL for 5th Grade

Wow, my kid did really poorly and passed advanced in the reading SOL. Not surprising since the kid hates writing. Does this mean greater focus on writing? Because honestly, FCPS has been lacking in that.

What was your score?

No sorry, that’s now what it means, but he’ll take it again in 8th grade!

Confused by this. We just got my 5th grader's "integrated reading and writing component" test report back and there was no pass or pass advanced option. They just provided the written response scores. My kid did not score well. Just 2 out of 8 in each category.

Where is this report?

I Don't see writing in the SOL reports I can access. Where is it?

Same here. Same scores. Passed with 2 out of 8.

The state hasn’t said what the scores mean. Would guess that 6, 7, and 8 are passing. 5 approaching. But that’s just a guess.

If you request to see the writing sample, the school can send it. They were directed by the state to withhold the writing sample, unless requested. 2 out of 8 is not good. But it does mean they actually addressed the writing prompt. If they type garbage, off topic, or just copy from the passage then they get no score.

I got this report after school let out on the final day. No explanation other than the 2 out of 8 score. I guess they were hoping parents wouldn’t notice.

I'm confused by this, I got a report (I think in the mail) my husband showed it to me. It doesn't have a single score. It shows six multiple choice questions that my daughter got them then has points earned for composing/written expression and usage/mechanics. I'm not sure how to read this, or where I can find an overall score.

There's no "real score" because this is is just a practice/pilot SOL. I expect they will formalize it next year and there will be a score with Pass Advanced and Pass Proficient like the regular SOLs. It is taken by 5th and 8th graders (and maybe 10 or 11th graders?) so there will be another opportunity for your DC to take it and receive a score.

Schools are still open. Call and ask for a copy of the writing sample your child did.
