schools in other states have a class for trigonometry, often combined with something else. When is trig covered in the FCPS classes? |
in loudoun county, it is introduced in Algebra 2 Trig, which most take in 9th grade, and those on accelerated path take it in 8th grade. |
Trig is part of Algebra 2. On the old, traditional path it's offered in 11th. Accelerated options are 10th or 9th, with a smaller, super-accelerated group taking it in 8th. The PP is, presumably, the troll who thinks that all students should take Alg 1 in 6th, which is the only way to take Alg 2 by 8th without Geometry as a summer course. |
Algebra 2 HN is an option for 8th graders at Carson. Not sure if it includes trig topics. https://carsonms.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/inline-files/FinalCourseSelectionSheet8_.pdf |
They why post unhelpful info? ![]() |
In FCPS's course catalog, Trig is not included in Algebra 2 HN. In high school, Algebra 2 Trig HN is in theory offered, but only two high schools offer it. All other high schools just offer Algebra 2 HN; for them, Trig is combined with Precalculus. https://www.fcps.edu/academics/coursecatalogs |
I am an FCPS HS math teacher.
Trig is introduced in geometry (basic right triangles, sohcahtoa) and fleshed out in precalculus (unit circle, graphs of trig functions) It is not touched in either algebra 2 or alg 2 honors unless the teachers are going off script. |
I though Trig and Pre-Calc were always combined, regardless of whether the course title is one, the other, or a semester of each, or some other variant. |
LCPS also has two different courses for 8th/9th graders to choose from: Algebra 2 and Algebra 2/Trig HN. Both are available at most schools. |
It used to be standard to have honors students take Trig with Algebra 2, while regular students took Trig with Pre-Calc. However, that was seen as tracking, so districts began to drop Honors Algebra 2/Trig and are now moving to have all students take Trig with Pre-Calc. |
PP FCPS effectively no longer offers Algebra2/Trig. LCPS has not followed suit, so far. |
Algebra I should never be allowed in FCPS prior to 9th grade because it works against equity. |
if so, what math would students learn from 6th to 8th grade? |
Loudoun's algebra 2/trig includes a weak amount of trigonometry.
I would prefer they drop it and instead include conic sections. |
Alg 2/Trig has an introduction to trig, which is concise and appropriately scaled amount. This is preferred by advanced students who go onto precal/calc. For those who graduate HS with minimum math, there is another course which is Algebra 2 only. |
