DC is a Freshman in TJ, taking Math 3. DC did well in Math in middle school and Math 3 was the next progression. However, DC has lower grades and struggling with some concepts. DC's friend who also started with Math 3, decided to move down to Math 2.5 as they could not handle it well. In hindsight, I wish we had done that. DC is panicking as the next one, Math 4 is supposed to be very hard. Is it possible to repeat Math 3 to get a better grade (DC's final grade would definitely be not what we would like it to be).
Any parents in the same boat who moved to a lower math class or repeated math class in Sophomore year? Any advice is appreciated! |
OP here again. Request genuine advice. Please no unkind comments about why DC should not be at TJ. DC is very good in science, and had won awards in science fairs and competitions. They like math as well and got good grades in middle school. TJ Math usually being harder than base school might be one factor. |
I don't believe that you can expunge a grade in HS, I know you can in MS but I don't think you can in HS.
I would suggest a tutor over the summer to review Math 3 and get ready for Math 4. I doubt that they would allow your child to re-take Math 3. |
DC's ibest teammate from last year was in a similar situation, and finally decided to transfer to base school. They were in TJ Math 1 & 2 and struggling. Talking to the counselor is much better approach than getting random advice. |
What math did they go into when went back to base school? |
Algebra 2, i assume. |
Are there concepts that your kid can review over the summer to prepare for Math 4? Not every solution has to involve tutoring or prep classes; over the summer, maybe your kid can take advantage of online resources to start to prepare for next year? |
TJ Math 4 & 5 cover fundamental precalculus concepts. If a student is highly capable and self-directed, Khan Academy might suffice, others may need a summer class to get a preview.

OP here. Thank you for your advice. We are going to discuss with the counsellor what options we have. However, during the course of the year, DC complained that the counsellor never had any time for the students. DC barely got a few minutes with them. I wanted to get the perspective from any parents who might have repeated a class or moved their kid to a lower math level. I will certainly work with DC over the summer. |
TJ math is not easy. It is not that TJ intentionally made it difficult; rather, students are used to easy math grades in middle/base school, and when TJ teaches math the way it is supposed to be taught students find the pace and workload overwhelming. Repeating or moving down a level is not a practical option as much as slowing down, having modest gpa expectation, and aiming for completion of minimum Calc AB, a graduation requirement.
TJ Counselors have a tough task of guiding a diverse range of students, with few scaling two levels past AP to take on multivairable and then differential calc, few others looking to cap it off with the minimum Calc AB, and a large majority seeking various math levels in between. |
