Hey Parents,
Long story short, my kid has been scoring really well on the NNAT, CoGAT, and even the HOPE tests, but his i-Ready scores were a disaster. I was so confused because he's a math genius! I asked his 1st-grade teacher but got no clear answer. In 2nd grade, the same bad i-Ready scores kept coming until his teacher told me she noticed he sometimes answers randomly. I confronted my son, and he admitted to it, promising not to do it again. Lo and behold, in the spring i-Ready math test, he scored 98% after consistently getting 84%! I'm thrilled we figured out the issue but bummed he lost his spot in AAP because of it. Does anyone know if it's super hard to get back in during 3rd grade? |
I have no idea what DC was doing. 2nd grader Fall: Reading 68%; Math 98% Winter: Reading 72%; Math: 84% Spring: Reading 98%; Math: 64% I don't know how to understand these scores. |
I would assume he was under challenged in math this year but had a ton of growth in reading. Did he get bored and guess on the math iready? |
I was told this week that the spring i-Ready test was the last time that FCPS will be using i-Ready. There will be a new program/assessment in the fall. Teachers will find out more on Thursday/Friday (teacher workdays to end the year) and in the pre-service days in August before school starts up again.
Moral of the story: If this is true, spring scores likely do not matter for much going into next year. The focus will be on the new assessment method. I would doubt i-Ready would be used for AAP applications next year if it's not given in the fall. |
To answer your question, OP, it’s definitely possible to get into AAP based on 3rd grade performance. My daughter did. Her grades in 3rd grade were good (but not all 4s), iReadys generally very good (reading) or excellent (math), and I assume the teacher evaluation was good too. |
I ready is boring as hell and so tedious. It is seriously torture for children especially gifted ones. |
I wonder how effective a very long test can be, especially since many kids might get bored and start answering randomly. Not all kids have the patience to complete a lengthy test. |
I hate I-ready and it's crazy to me that any school would use it for placement. For literacy DIBELs is a much more accurate assessment. I don't know of a better math assessment but there must be one out there. I-ready does a very good job of evaluating how familiar a child is with I-ready and is thus a great way to force kids to learn using I-ready apps and materials. But not a very good way to actually find out if your child is mastering concepts. |
Not just long. It has game imbedded. Ridiculous! |
Will FCPS also abandon Lexia and ST math? |
Please! Just let the teachers teach. |
I really hope it's MAP Growth. The scores are much more useful and meaningful than iReady. |
How do you know what percentile in iready? I only got a score. |
I think only grades K-3 will take a different reading assessment called VALS. |
