Parenting -- Special Concerns
|
Hi parents,
This may seem odd coming from someone whose mother came out mid-life as a Lesbian, but I'm looking for pre-school/early elementary books that have LGBT characters OTHER than two mommies/daddies. For example, a grandmother who's a Lesbian. Or a story with a subject like "Uncle Fred has a Partner Named Ted".
Yes, I plan to talk about relationships when my kids are old enough to understand. But I thought having books might be a good reference for them as they talk to their friends on their own. Plus, they don't see their grandmother often so I'd like to have some tangible images of different types of LGBT people around for them to relate to. Does this make sense? Thoughts appreciated. |
| Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for you, but I like the idea. Kids learn in all sorts of ways, and to see different types of families in a book is a nice way to share with your child. This along with regular discussion and life experiences for your child. |

One Hundred is a Family is a great book. It's by Pam Ryan. Also, Who's in a Family, by Robert Skutch. Both are available on Amazon. Each of those books shows all different types of families, and gay and lesbian families are folded in.

Great idea, OP. Unfortunately I can't think of any books like that -- but you could try doing a search on amazon.com and see what comes up, among other things.
BTW, my daughter was a big fan of Heather Has Two Mommies but it seemed so rigidly politically correct that I took a great disliking to it. Heather goes to the perfect day care that just happens to have about every kind of family one could think of that includes every protected class there is. It was a little too precious for me. Anybody else have that reaction or is it just me? |

A bit OT, but I was doing a similar book search, and when it came down to choosing between Heather Has Two Mommies vs. Walter the Farting Dog, I picked the Walter book because it was a lot more fun.

| "And Tango Makes Three" is a great book, but it's about 2 daddy penguins. It's just a good book to add to your library. The story and pictures are really sweet. |
My brother, who is gay, and I were talking about this topic. My DD is 3 and we went to a book store in Rehoboth to find a book about family members who are gay. There were only books about two mommies/two daddies. If anyone finds a book about grandparents, uncles, etc... PLEASE post the title Thanks!!

Hello,
Just saw elsewhere a recommendation for Uncle Bobby's Wedding. Here's the summary: When Uncle Bobby announces his engagement, everyone is happy and excited. Everyone except Chloe. If Uncle Bobby starts a new family, will this be the end of the love and attention she has treasured from her very special uncle? After Chloe gets to know Bobby's partner, Jamie, better during several enjoyable outings with the couple, on the day of UNCLE BOBBY'S WEDDING (Putnam, $15.99), by Sarah Brannen, she is happy and excited. Now she'll have two special uncles. Ages 4-8 |
| Sounds great! Thanks for passing it on. |
