Sunflowers

Is it too late to plant sunflower seeds or can I still do it? Did I miss the window?

Depends on the type, but you should be fine.

Pay attention to the 'Days to Maturity' information. By and large, sunflowers take 60 days (according to the packet; none of mine are ever on this schedule, and usually take longer). There are some that are a little shorter or a little longer. Either way, you're looking at August for blooms.

Thx. I will keep an eye on days to maturity. I like the idea of August blooms

DP here. Hope you don’t mind if I jump in with another sunflower question.

I planted sunflower seeds, the seedlings came up and formed two leaves each, but now, a few days later, many of those two leaves have “disappeared”- possibly eaten by something, but I don’t know what if that’s the case. What’s going on and can I fix it?

Chipmunks? They love them when they are just starting to grow. Also my zinnias. They don't bother them once they get some height.

I read about sticking plastic forks tines up around the young growing plant to deter the chipmunks. Worked pretty well, actually.
