| My 12 yo has always had issues with these things but as he gets older it seems to intensify. The fixations are more fleeting than an intense interest - more like say I want to watch x when I get home. Then he will obsess about how much time he will have, what order he will do things, ask about it over and over and over. The nagging is fairly self explanatory - he will ask to do or buy something and cannot stop repeating himself. It’s exhausting and nothing seems to help. Any ideas? We are on so many meds but may add a SSRI soon for this. |

It's called perseverating. Part of rigidity.
Does he have any sort of diagnosis? |
Yes and they explain it. Epilepsy and adhd. But how to help it? |

We keep A List - an actual, paper written list. Once it’s there, it helps him stop trying to remember it by repeating it at me. So I can say, “put it on your list” when he starts in. Not a perfect fix but moderately helpful.
(You could try a digital list for when you’re out and about. Didn’t work for us because my kid needed to SEE it to believe it was safe to stop keeping it front of mine but YMMV.) |
