Is it just me? It seems as though bananas go from green to brown / mushy without ever being actually ripe. I've tried buying at a variety of different stores.
Costco is an absolute no go. Harris Teeter and Wegmans are so so... What gives? |
| I have not noticed this. I buy bananas at Giant. |
| No issues here. One trick to slow ripening is to put a piece of Saran Wrap around the very top of the stems. Also make sure apples aren’t sitting next to the bananas; they off gas and cause ripening. |
| Giant, Acme and Food Lion are fine. |
| You pretty much have to buy bananas every 2 days to have perfect ones. |
|
Mealy ones at Whole Foods. Never sweet or tasty.
I think it's varieties of bananas. Some travel better. It's like tomatoes. |
| I only by organic ones and they are fine *shrugs* |
| Yes for Costco bananas. They go from green to mush in a day. |
| Costco bananas are gross. We stopped buying them a long time ago. |
| Yes and giant seems to only carry these types of bananas. |
| Yes. We bought some green ones that never ripened to yellow but remained hard. Then, we have also bought some non-sweet tasting ones, too. |
| Probably not what you’re talking about. Hr thought this article on the change in banana flavor was super interesting — https://www.epicurious.com/ingredients/history-of-the-gros-michel-banana |
| I think part of the problem is you are buying them too underripe. If they are quite green, they are just not going to ripen properly- they were picked too soon. Don’t get them if they are any more the just slightly green at the top, but mostly yellow. |
| If your room temperature is very warm, it ripens bananas faster. Cold temperature damages the bananas causing it to just go bad. Then, it taste worse than a ripened banana. |
+1. Costco has bad bananas. I have not noticed this from any other store. |
