Will FCPS HS use the same grading system in SY2024-25?

Or will we continue to have major disparities?

Traditional HS grading versus Madison HS of SBG versus Herndon HS SBG

Yes, all same as this year.

Madison parents received an email from the principal stating “We are still in a holding pattern concerning next year’s grading policies. We hope to hear soon from FCPS and their decision regarding any changes to the division’s grading policy.”

So while I’m not holding my breath, it seems there may be some changes.

Yes, SBG for everyone.

they don't use SBG in college. forget that silliness.

let's continue the rolling gradebook.

no more retakes.

homework is not graded; simply used for practice.

only grades in gradebook are assessments based, whether informal/formative or summative.

SBG = skills based grading, which is also called “ equity grading. “

It’s used for further Gatehouse’ equity scheme.

Yes, SBG for everyone.

HHS is having another principal meeting next week.

I very much doubt we will see grading consistently handled across the system.

We had principal chats at Madison too last year, then that ended this year. We were told that there would be workshops on SBG in the fall of 2023 but that never happened and then principal was careful to try to make sure to limit opportunities for parents to ask questions in large settings such as back to school night. She is responsible for SBG but this year, she asks like she has no control over whether it stays at Madison and is leaving it up to a vote by department chairs.

Herndon principal will probably start copying her.

You would think that at least grading would be consistent across FCPS HS, but nope, it is not.

Wait, does this mean if the Madison dept chairs vote against SBG than it will go away? Would it revert back to the previous retake policy?

In reality, I think their input would “be taken under advisement.”

This is why Calvert sent an email to parents with a student survey, not that I think for 1 second Calvert cares about their feedback:

We are still in a holding pattern concerning next year’s grading policies. We hope to hear soon from FCPS and their decision regarding any changes to the division’s grading policy. Once FCPS shares its new grading guidelines, our Leadership Council, comprised of all department chairs, will convene to adjust Madison’s grading policies. Regardless of any grading policy changes, our instructional practices will remain consistent - next year we will continue to focus on assessment design, feedback that moves student learning forward, and alignment of practice to assessments.

Students have the opportunity to provide feedback to staff by completing our Underclassman Survey. Thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this survey.

Is 98% an A or B at your HS?

At Madison HS it seems to be a B whereas at Langley HS it seems to an A as is traditional.
