Toddlers being tied to chairs

Anonymous
Is it standard practice at daycare for toddlers 2-3 year old to be strapped to a toddler chair with a seatbelt? The daycare I toured do this for circle time, meal time, and nap time or anytime they need to contain the child. They do this with children who do not stay seated. They said it teaches younger toddlers to stay seated.

These are the type of chairs they use

Uh, no, that is not standard practice for anything except meal times, and even then most places don't do this for kids over 12-18 months.

I could imagine a special situation in which this was used for a specific child who might pose a danger to themselves or others during certain activities. But it should be used rarely.

Also, they're strapping a kid in a chair for nap time?? Run, this place sucks.

I don’t know if it’s standard, but your title is very misleading. They’re not being tied to chairs, which has a very different connotation than chairs with seatbelts.
I guess you got me to click on this thread.

However, you’re telling me they’re strapping kids down during nap time?

I am confused by your post as well. Why are children sitting in chairs napping? This post makes no sense. And no, they are not tied to chairs....

They keep some kids strapped to a chair if they won’t stay in their cot. Those kids wait in the chair while other kids get lulled to sleep. When it’s their “turn” to get lulled to sleep they get removed from the chair.

This is not normal or okay.

This post sounds odd.

No it's not okay.

I have the opposite problem. My daycare lets kids run around nonstop during meal times. WHY?! My 2.5 year old happily sat during all meals, started daycare and now we fight nonstop with her at every meal. When daycare loses control of several kids, the others all follow suit like little ducks and now none of them stay seated. I think a lot of it is teacher training. They need to work with those kids who don't stay seated. But kids should only have to sit for meals. Reading and circle time should be sitting on carpets. And all other times should be free motion.

How do you propose they do nap time when several kids won’t stay in their cot and disrupting the kids who are willing to stay in their cot and are sleeping?

Not normal. We use an inhome with 12 kids and 2 providers. Usually 2 kids between 18-2 and the rest over2. The little ones are in high chairs and the rest are in little chairs at a big semi-round table all eat together. Noone gets up and runs around and they eat a full meal- soup, entree, salad and starch/carb and fruit dessert.

How are teachers able to stop one kid who refuse to stay in her cot from running around disrupting other kids who are sleeping or trying to sleep? The ratio is 1:8. Seems like an impossible task. The teacher can try to teach the child but it can take weeks before the child learns what’s expected of her.

I’ve stopped by my son’s daycare during meal and nap time and the kids are all sitting at tables and chairs nicely eating. Even after nap time I was shocked to peek in and see kids just sitting on their rolled up blankets waiting to be called for the bathroom. No one was running around. It sounds like that daycare has a management and routine problem.

How do you get the kids in the little chairs to stay seated if they don’t have a seatbelt like the high chairs
