How can an FCPS student prepare for such competitions?

Is there a comprehensive list of all contests that students can possibly participate in?

It looks like student just choose their project, and have to win the regionals before bringing them to the fair. There are judges for categorized award, and there are special award organizations (e.g. USAF, industry associations) that award projects related to their specialty.
