Rec basketball for rising 3rd grade girl?

Anonymous
I’m having a hard time finding a basketball league for my eight-year-old daughter to join. She’s never played before, but recently shown an interest. Any recommendations? We’re in Silver Spring/Montgomery County. Thx

To my knowledge, rec basketball in Montgomery County is mostly available in the winter.

You might be able to find some organizations that do yearround options, such as PPA or tru2form.

And you can try some training facilities like pro Fit.

But they're all probably a bit more expensive than rec basketball.

Rec basketball is usually a winter sport, you won't find anything now.

Summer camps that have skills classes for beginners.

In the winter do the Montgomery County Parks rec league, my total beginner second grader did it this year and loved it.

PPA does fall, winter, and spring seasons. They have some camps this summer, too.

+1 on three season PPA basketball. Similar to MOCO rec basketball with a bit more instruction during games.

OP here! Thanks so much for these suggestions. PPA has girls teams too?

Can you share more info about this? How does this work? I have two never ever (1st and 3rd graders) who may be interested. Thanks!

Here is the link to the Montgomery County basketball league page:

There are some smaller more local leagues in the various cities, ie Gaithersburg, Rockville, etc. You should be able to find more in information on their rec pages.

And you'll find some private places that have teams and leagues too like KOA, PPA, etc. I think generally the city/county rec leagues are the recommended starting point due to being a good value and giving players experience.

What we found is that it helps a lot to go into a team with a group that you know. It can be a neighborhood team, school team, etc.

It might not matter as much if your kid is younger and just starting out. Where at a younger age, more players/teams might be on the beginner level and open to new teams forming/new players. But from what we've seen at the older levels, a lot of teams are already preformed and can be tryout teams, teams with yearround players, or teams part of an aau organization/team or private paid club and putting their lower level player teams on the rec level team.

So if you're signing your kids up to go on their own, there's a chance that they'll get grouped together with the rest of the players who never played previously and didn't have an existing team to go to. Meaning they're all beginners and kind of hard to compete with the returning teams. Or your player might be placed on an existing team that has spots available but may not be that close to you.

From what I gather, that nova basketball league that is often mentioned on here, FCYBL, has a draft system. I think people tend to pick their returning players but ideally it helps balance things out. But I haven't seen that kind of thing around Montgomery County but also am still getting to know the basketball landscape around here.

But as mentioned, I think third grade is still kind of beginner level and not playing under official rules in the leagues that we've seen. So you might not need to worry about those kinds of things yet and is a good age for them to try it out if they're still a beginner.
