| So here we are on Memorial Day and my boss is working like it's a regular day. And a few of us worked on both Saturday and Sunday. I signed off. I need the rest. We only get six holidays off a year and people can't enjoy them? I really do not want to compete in this year's, "who can work the most hours and take off the least amount of vacation and holiday time" contest. As for my own people, please don't send emails at 11PM at night to try to prove sacrifice and devotion. An honest day's work is fine. |

So you signed up to work for a company with very few holidates. And you are now whining about the terms of emplpyment, to which you had previously agreed. I have zero sympathy. If you don't like the terms of a deal, then don't agree to them.
You have obviously never worked in retail or in the entertainment industry. |
| err...holidays. |
| It's a job, not school, you work when they need you or find a different job. |
Sounds like the terms were that today is a paid holiday and OP is reasonable to be annoyed at being expected to work anyway. That said, I'm not crying for OP until I know the salary. |
| Last year, my DH billed time every day of the year except Christmas Day. He didn’t work all of every holiday, but some jobs just don’t let you totally check out. But, he is well compensated. If you are not, then you need to find a new job. No one should be asked to work every day of the year for peanuts. But, for bags of money it’s a fine trade off. |
| Depends on the salary. If you make 250k+ this is what you’re getting paid for. If you aren’t happy, get a lower paying job. |
I make 250k+ and I sure as hell am not working on holidays. Screw that. |
+1 $290k and I never work holidays or weekends. |
| I work in a law firm and had to do some work today for a case that has deadlines coming up. That's not always the case with holidays but sometimes it is. If you can get your work done ahead of time you can avoid having to do it on your time off. But I bill at least 2000 hours/year and that generally means a bunch of weekend/holiday/night time. I'm not sure it's worth it but that's the life. |
So what's the threshold? $100K? $150k? $200K salary only until you are on call |
|
I’m at work, working 12 hours today.
I’m good with it, I’m getting holiday pay bit taking comp hours instead so I’m earning 18 hours of comp plus my days pay. |
It's just an American thing. Well-paid execs in other countries still get their weeks of holidays. |
But that's the thing, you're getting compensated for it, OP doesn't sound like he would. |
It's nuts. We have people in Singapore, Greece, Netherlands, UK and they get many more holidays and vacations. It ticks us off in the US. And they take EVERY one of them without a guilt trip. |
