| Why does it seem like not many DMV kids go to NC State while Auburn, South Carolina, etc. are so popular? |
| NC State is more practical, less fun. That’s not the DCUM crowd. |

My kid was accepted and we did the accepted students tour. After 15 minutes of the tour, my kid said I hate it here, can we leave? So we did.
Im not saying its a bad school, but it was not a school my kid wanted to attend. |
Great feedback. Why did your kid hate it? |
|
My kid did not like the all brick campus, paths under railways and many sports off campus requiring a bus ride to get to the football stadium.
Also, the kids on our tour were a strange mix. My kid was just turned off by the whole scene. Again, not bashing NC State! Just one kids observation. |
Auburn is not popular. And now with Alabama laws anyone sending a student there is an idiot. And USC is for less academic students who will go into business with mommy or daddy upon graduation. Again only idiots pay for OOS tuition to send a kid out of State to South Carolina. Absurd financially. Not like great internships are coming out of SC. USC getting a job after coming back to the DMV is very hard. NC State traditionally OOS students acceptance rate is only like 12% per state mandate. Hence who wants to go to a school with mostly instate students. More people think of UNC when thinking of NC. It is very hard to make friends at NC State because most kids come from the Charlotte or Raleigh areas and know each other already. NCSU Engineering is good however campus is about a 15 to 20-minute walk from the main campus it is a pain. Football games also suck as off-campus students can not walk. NCSU is traditionally similar to USC for out-of-state students who want to stay in NC after graduation most don't so getting a job in DMV with little contacts kind of stinks. NCSU is not a bad school if a student likes an urban environment, rec sports (tons of intramural teams). Besides Engineering they have the School of Textiles which is fabulous. Business school is horrible, job coming from there would be Enterprise Rental or Target. And it's extremely disorganized. If a student is instate then sure it's totally fine to go to NC State. |
How is NC State different from Clemson, VT or Auburn? They are all land grant engineering schools with a blue collar vibe. |
More difficult admit; Less fun. |
How? |
Clemson is only good for Physics. Do people not want their kids to have jobs after graduating???? NC State draws from RTP, Raleigh & Charlotte lots of jobs...... Clemson nope VT heads and tails better than the others. Auburn is in Alabama enough said. Again you want your kid living there after graduation???? |
Not less fun definitely more difficult. |

My BIL went to NC State Engineering, Grad school UPenn robotics graduate school.
My other BIL went to NC State Engineering CMU Robotics graduate school. |
|
This is not hard.
NC State has a cap on admissions the others do not. The state of NC only allows 12% OOS admits. |
|
Because people see it as a boring state school with nothing special about it. That affects the number of OOS applicants, and the low OOS admittance rate affects the ultimate number of attendees.
That said, my BFF in NC says it's a well respected school over there with an unusually spirited alumni base. It's almost identical to what Tech is to Virginians in many ways. There's no reason for a Virginian to go to NC State when they have VT. |
