tone of voice

I haven't interviewed in a long time. I recently went into an interview where 6-7 people were in the room. I found it intimidating but also I noticed all of these nuances.

If the "boss" asked me a question with a slightly agitated tone (best I can describe it) I noticed it would stir me up and I would answer more quickly and faster which then seemed to make her more verbally agitated. lol

Does anyone know what I mean? What are you supposed to do in these situations? Banter back or try to calm the situation more?

I am a boss and i still get agitated and reactive. Take a pause and a breath if you are starting to feel defensive.
