Is it possible to get semi-permanent color to cover grays?

I just went somewhere to get my grays covered. Never done this before. I don’t have a ton of grays yet but way more than just a few strands. I was hoping to get semi-permanent in case they don’t do a good job color matching as I don’t want to change my overall hair color. Apparently they didn’t have semi-permanent to cover grays, only permanent. Now I want to know if this even exists? Where can I go to get semi-permanent single-process color for the purpose of covering grays? Ideally in Bethesda.

I get demi permanent hair color from esalon to cover my grays.

You can absolutely get semi or demi permanent hair color to cover grays. It isn’t specifically made to color grays but you can tell them that is what you want and insist on it. The results of how much coverage it gives will vary and likely not be opaque as permanent. Next time don’t say you want to cover gray, tell them you want to subtly blend. Never put permanent color on your hair

It ruins your hair. Demi is much better for it. My hair condition improved noticeably when I switched salons and at the same time switched from permanent to demi.

What’s the difference between Demi and semi?

I do a color gloss to cover grays. The coverage isn't 100%, but it's good enough that you won't really see any gray unless you're really looking for it, and it prevents my hair from getting too damaged. If you request that, just reassure your stylist that you understand the limitations of non-permanent color on grays. It's possible they're worried that you will have unrealistic expectations and get upset if they do a demi permanent.

that's what i do, too = very happy with the results. i'm 50, with a smattering of grey - probably more than i realize at this point, since i get this gloss done every six or eight weeks.

i have to say - i actually like that a few greys show through (but just a few). i think it looks more natural/

What’s the difference between Demi and semi?

Demi has about 3% peroxide. Semi has no peroxide, which is why it can’t cover grey.

I use Demi and I’m about 25% gray. It works well! It’s like 80-90% coverage so if you look really closely, you’ll see some hair is more medium brown versus my natural dark brown. It works well and is so much less damaging than the permanent color i used to do. Also the permanent often went red toned in the sun which i hate

Gloss is what I was going to get. Maybe I should have tried it.

That is so strange. I got my grays covered for my wedding and had never dyed my hair before. Every single person I spoke to said I should get demi/semi permanent based on what I wanted. I went with the advice and it was great. I would find a new salon. I think you just got bad advice.

10-20%, depending how much coverage you want. Glosses will have less. Something like Redkin Shades EQ has 7% I believe.

Yes it ruins your hair and it will turn your natural brown hair brassy
