Anything in ES like AAP?

I have a really smart 2nd grader. I have heard many people telling me that I should move to virginia (esp.fairfax county) for their ES AAP program for the benefits of my kid's education. My kid outsmarts their kids at 4th/5th grade in AAP program on math & reading comprehension, and I have done zero enrichment. My kid plays all day and watches youtube/does sports

I am getting upset over that it seems like that I am failing my kid on purpose because I don't make the moving. I can't relocate. What else can I do? I bet there must be some kids like mine in mcps, what do you do? Is there any progran in montgomery county like virigina AAP program?

The MCPS accelerated program begins in 4th grade. It’s different than AAP in FCPS because MCPS does not have spots for all the kids who qualify. The way the seats are assigned changes from time to time, but since Covid, it’s been a straight lottery of qualified kids.

Another perspective you might consider is that if you have a smart, happy, well-adjusted kid, whatever you’re doing right now is working just fine.

Being two grades ahead in second grade is not remarkable at all.

Enrichments are available within the cirricula before 4th, though not academic magnets. State-mandated GT identification (SIPPI) also can occur before 4th. In understandably rare cases, grade advancement can occur.

School admins have varying management/educational philosophies and schools have variable student and educator management challenges. As a consequence, they can be vairiably amenable to making a priority of identification outside of that required and to application of associated measures (e.g., enrichments) with fidelity.

Individual advocacy may be in order and may be required across multiple levels (teacher, school administration, MCPS central administration/Accelerated & Enriched Instruction) to meet with success, but I would suggest approaching that with both a soft touch and an open mind. You may want to check out the MCCPTA Gifted Education Committee Facebook group for additional thoughts and resources -- there may be answers/resources, there, that both would make your advocacy more effective and would lessen system burden.

Just sign up for outside program then, like AOPS, Russian math, whatever. Many kids are in the same boat and parents have to do something to fill the gap.

What does really smart 2nd grader mean exactly? What do they know, what can they do? What makes you believe they are significantly ahead of most 2nd graders in their school. K-3 education is intentionally not accelerated to ensure that ALL kids get a STRONG foundation set of skills. Quicker isn’t always better with this, but depth is. This is a great time to work on math academic vocabulary, seeing math in the real world, asking your school how they apply it across subjects.

AAP is pretty awful. MCPS had better options but these days it's all loterry.
