Elementary SOLs

First year with a kid taking these (3rd grade). Do they get any information on how they did when they finish the test? When do parents typically find out about individual results?

We found out our ES child in N Arlington school failed their SOLs 2 weeks before the next school year started. Three entire months after taking the tests. I was so pissed off.

You should ask the teacher. We learned our lesson and now have zero confidence in the capability of the admin. We also immediately moved to get child the tutoring they needed despite APS teachers giving them straight As (before grading policy change).

Probably July

If your kid fails but is close to passing you will find out so they can retake and try to pass. Otherwise you don't find out until July. It's dumb

I am not sure the school will give you the score if you ask but they will likely tell you if they failed or passed.

If you ask, they should be able to give you a print out showing how they did for different standards. We have asked for it to know what topics to remediate with a private tutor over the summer. I think it might be a hassle for teachers to get because we usually need to push a little.

I’m not sure why APS chooses to wait so long to send out the SOL reports. ACPS and FCPS send them home with the final report card. However, if you request the report from the school’s testing coordinator, the have to give it to you. The teachers (at least in APS) on see the scores and don’t get a copy of the full report unless they are remediating a student for a retake.

If you’re APS you find out quite quickly if your kid got a very high fail and is eligible for a retake. In our school the kid would then get some revision help and do the retake. Other than that the official scores come out in late July. My kid was in special ed and sometimes I’d get a tip-off if I asked the teacher - do we think we will have to prep Larlo for retakes, and I’d get “no, he passed”.

In my experience some teachers tell the kids their scores.

I think parents should object to the way APS gatekeeps the scores from parents for months.

No. If they fail you find out same day. If pass, sometime in summer.

This is 100% false. This is not APS policy. You may have found out from your very nice teacher but I’ve been down this rabbit hole and it is both not my actual experience nor is it the policy of APS.

Why do they withhold scores? Why are they secret?

They are avoiding parent confrontations

You find out right away IF they narrowly fail & can retake it. Not if they pass, or fail by a lot.
