SOL Score calculation

Anonymous
Its SOL season ,I'm trying to understand how SOL scores are calculated . There are Raw scores and scaled scores, so how are the raw scores calculated against the scaled scores .Also I heard that recently that there were some changes in the SOL scoring system ,something similar to iReady scores where in if you answer is incorrect it gives you easy questions and the scores are reduced . I'm muddled totally with all the calculation . Does anyone happen to have information on these ?

VDOE determines the scale. I think the BOE even has to vote on it. It varies every time they re-vote. Someone on the FCPS forum said this is every 7 years, but I can't find confirmation of that.

Here we go, there's some information in the middle of this article on the cut scores: https://virginiamercury.com/2023/03/29/virginia-explained-the-debate-over-student-expectations/

I am trying to find the information of SOL pass/proficient and pass/advanced percentage for a certain school. It is used to be clearly listed under the School Profile, now it is in VDOE and hard to understand. Is there an easier place to find that data?

There is a detailed report that you receive for the SOL tests.

What that article hints at but does not say is that the SOL tests change, with the test difficulty and the cut score changing every few years, getting easier and harder.

Can someone confirm if the test questions are based on the answer to previous question ?

DD says lot of kids in his MS who are "smart" are getting 400s and other getting 500s.

Recently saw a discussion about SOL here so thought i will check . Ty

It does say that buried towards the end, in the board's perspective section. It talks about how you can't judge the cut score without knowing how the test itself changes and has a table showing the cut scores back to when the SOLs first started. They change every 7 years (confirmed that now via the article), but on a staggered schedule between math and LA. Article does not cover high school SOLs.

Straight from the VDOE, here is confirmation that specifically the grade 3-8 math SOLs are adaptive: https://www.doe.virginia.gov/teaching-learning-assessment/student-assessment/virginia-sol-assessment-program/computer-adaptive-testing-cat

It appears this change was made in 2019, so it is not new.

I found the article from VDOE by googling "is the virginia sol test adaptive"

FWIW, we are currently in a harder cycle with the SOLs - the pandemic and learning loss are additional factors on top of that.

I thought for LA they made it easier in 2020?

PP here. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe the language arts test is also adaptive? And maybe the change started even earlier?

They temporarily lowered the passing score in 2021 from 400 to 350 because of the pandemic. But the test and the cut score for LA were in a harder cycle.

The language arts test is adaptive but only to a point. I’ve seen scores in which kids only miss 3 questions and not pass advanced and I’ve seen kids miss 4-5 questions and pass advanced. Some kids are given almost all “easy” questions, despite having very few errors (this actually lowers their overall score), while other students get several “medium” questions with more errors. Math is more adaptive than reading.
