DC Public and Public Charter Schools

... what was your thinking when you bought your house X years ago? Did you have a child already when you bought, or did you buy pre-baby and just stay? Did you pick your home primarily for its historic charm/the commute/its proximity to restaurants? Did you inherit your house? Did you even think about schools?
Did you know the local school had an open-air drug market when you chose your house, but figured you'd get an OOB slot or something so it didn't matter? (I have a friend like this in Columbia Hts) Did you feel you had no other choice but to buy in-bounds for a shit-hole school because home prices were rising so rapidly and that's what you could afford? (a different friend who lives in Bloomingdale felt this way). Me, I never, ever thought we would be living in this same exact residence 10 years later. |
| Bought the house as a single person and wasn't thinking about families, kids, schools, etc. |
|
are you saying that the open-air drug market is part of the school?
When you call this a "shit-hole" school, is it because you've been in this school and don't like what's going on inside. Is this your opinion of the teachers and administrators? Or is this all hypothetical? |

Bought in SWDC while pregnant with 1st baby. Did not intend to stay more than a couple of years. I was totally oblivious about schools. It was a rookie mistake, and now we're stuck, although the neighborhood is improving.

Bought our current house because it was all we could afford. After we moved out of our tiny apartment, we got a dog. Then we thought, why not have a baby.
8 years later, and we find out the (in-boundary) school half a block away is actually one of the best in the city. Sometimes you just get lucky. |
| I planned private, but then the economy didn't allow that... |
| We sent our child to the in-boundary school, and later did OOB. Guess what? The OOBs wasn't any better at curriculum and instruction. Ended up doing private for high school. |
| Couldn't afford a better school district within walking distance of Metro. Didn't think we'd live here more than 5 years, and we didn't have a kid at the time.... |
We totally bought for the big historic rowhouse and the neighborhood potential. Sure we thought we'd have kids some day, we just didn't expect to accidentally get pregnant 6 weeks after closing.
Our neighborhood school is a disgrace. If we hadn't gotten into Yu Ying a couple years ago, we'd be in Virginia by now. |

Also in SW, wasn't thinking about having kids at the time (ridiculous 'oversight' looking back), just loved the fact I could walk to work (though since switched jobs so don't have that going for me anymore either). K is still a few years away so we are planning our OOB lottery strategies for the next few rounds and hoping the housing market recovers completely just in case that doesn't work. And there's always private.
Zero chance the neighborhood improvement will have any significant impact on the local school. |
| Bought without thinking about schools, bought for decent neighborhood, decent affordable house (back before the explosion, in 00, now we wouldn't be able to afford our current house!), easy commutes. Like the neighborhood and neighbors, but feeling very stuck. Still have work to do on our fixer upper - do we do the work, polish up the house, sell, and move to a JKLM neighborhood? (oldest starting K this year in questionable neighborhood school.) But if we're moving, is it time for NoVa? MoCo? Stuck does not even begin to describe how we feel right now. |
Almost the same situation here (but a different charter). Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. We are not ruling out a move to NoVa in the future, though. |
| For people who are thinking of maybe moving, when do you plan to do it? Someone told me that third is a good year, so that they can establish friendships before middle school. I went to the same school all the way through and never had to be the "new kid". Any thoughts? For those who did move after K, if any are reading this, how did it go? Do you have any advice. |
| Bought row house in "up and coming" neighborhood for a steal. Had a baby at the time. In-bound school NOT an option. We planned for and are in private. |
