| Current 9th grade parent here. DC got the form for 10th grade encouraging them to do their 20 hours direct service to a worshipping community over the summer. The form needs to be signed by next week by the person who will supervise. When I as DC they just shrug. Can anyone tell me examples of what other 10th graders have done to meet this requirement? |
| Not an SJC family, but sounds like you need to call your parish and ask what kind of volunteer work a teen might be able to do this summer. Or ideally have your kid call, but I get it’s a busy time for them right now with APs and finals. Mine are fried so I would probably make the call for them. |
+1. We’re not at SJC, but my DC is fulfilling a service requirement by volunteering at our church’s vacation bible school this summer. |
| Hi OP. Something at your church like a summer service trip or a regular time each week they volunteer at a shelter or serving meals to unhoused people or working at a place like SOME. |
| Call the Father McKenna Center (shelter) in DC. It is located on the grounds of Gonzaga college high school. They are used to having teen volunteers all year round. |
| PP here- the St. Lucie project is another organization that usually has summer opportunities |
| Sorry -St Lucy - strange autocorrect |
| Any regular sustained volunteer activity where they will be of service will work. It doesn’t have to be at a church but can. |
| It doesn’t have to be during the summer. My kids all did their service hours during the school year. Options of parish service include things like greeting and serving as an usher, music/choir, VBS, etc. my kids did many hours at the St Martin’s food pantry in Gaithersburg. |
| My always kid does the summer because too busy with sports and academics during the school year. For 10th my kid volunteered at a church (not our own) spent most of the time at their senior citizen activities center engaging with the seniors (exercises, conversations, etc.) and doing some manual labor to help staff there. Also attended some of the Sunday morning services and helped with their social media and livestreams of services. Find a faith community (any kind) at a location easy for you to get to and offer to help. |
DC is a current 10th grader at SJC and they also fulfilled the requirement at our church's VBC. |
| http://www.saintpaulskstreet.org/st-pauls-grate-patrol/. Grate Patrol is how DS accrued 15 volunteer hours last summer and how he plans to accrue 20 hours this summer. |
| It states it has to be "direct service to a worshipping community" so a soup kitchen won't qualify. |
So how does this work if you're one of the kids who comes from a family that is not Catholic and is not associated with a worshipping community? I would love to hear some examples of what SJC kids have done in this instance. |
Would the SJC Mission and Ministry office have some ideas? My kid attended a Parish school so although not Catholic, they went back there for 10th grade service. They went on one of the SJC summer mission trips as a rising junior. |
