My 10 year old is inviting the girls from her 4th grade class for an end-of-the-year pool party. I am debating whether to request that the parents stay (parents will be invited if they want.) It will be in our backyard, no lifeguard. What are your thoughts?

My reaction is no way regardless of parents attending or not. Maybe invite 2-3 families you know really well or host it at a public pool. The mix of backyard pool, lots of kids and no lifeguard or dedicated first aid person is a scary mix.
I don't meet just drowning risk- with that many girls the most likely stuff that would happen is hitting heads on the edge of the pool when trying to cartwheel in, slipping on the pool deck and other random stuff that you don't want to deal with when hosting a large group. They're young enough to not necessarily be safe in the water, but old enough to egg each other on and get pretty crazy. |
A few girls only, with their parents staying.
Why not just hire a lifeguard?
Parents stay and/or lifeguard.
Wow I think you need a lifeguard.
And a security guard in case the boys come to crash it.
You absolutely need a lifeguard. How many kids are you inviting?
I don’t think you need a lifeguard for 10 yr olds at a pool, as long as at least two adults are present at all times. Nearly all UMC 10 yr olds can swim.
Lifeguard

I have 3 friends with pools ( we do not) when they’re had large parties like this they’ve hired a teen lifeguard for 3 hours.
My kid is a really good swimmer and I wouldn’t let her attend in this situation without me. |
Op- we are inviting 8 kids.
No, you don't need a life guard for 8 girls who are 10.

I don’t think a lifeguard is necessary for that age as long as you supervise and set some ground rules (no diving, no flips off side, no standing on your friend’s shoulders… at that age, I feel like many girls love gymnastics-type stunts).
While inviting the parents isn’t necessary in my opinion, it might be nice to extend invitation just in case any of the parents would be more comfortable staying. |
I’m f OP is asking their parents stay because she’s concerned about the girls’ safety, then she should hire a lifeguard.
