Receiving car as gift from out of state

I feel like this should be obvious but I expect to be given a family member’s old car soon. They live in another state. I know we go to their DMV to transfer the title, and that I should add the car to my insurance policy effective the day I take possession. I know I need to go to DC DMV to register, pay the excise tax, etc. as soon as I get back to DC.

The part I’m unclear on is the window of time between receiving the car in the other state and driving it to DC. It will be unregistered and tagless during that time. Since I can’t get tags or registration until I have the title, what am I supposed to do?
