Convince me/dissuade me from

I’m debating this little “long weekend getaway” trip but can’t decide if it will be worth the time, effort, and especially the money.

Hotel resort on a lake with a huge pool, tons of activities (shuffleboard, outdoor games, bike rentals, golfing, etc) two hours from us. It’s sort of isolated and secluded but there are on-site food options. It will be $800 for three nights, plus whatever we pay for the overpriced food, I’m sure.

But I can’t help but think of what we could do with $800+ by just staying home. We have a neighborhood pool a mile away that we use all summer, so while “new” pools are always a novelty, it’s not like some activity we can’t obtain if we don’t leave home. But at the same time, getting away is always fun. No beds to make, no meals to make, no dishes to clean, no chores to feel obligated to do.

So I’m crowdsourcing pros and cons. What do you all think?

What can you do on the lake? I'd consider it for the lake, if I could kayak or fish, but I'd stay home for a pool/shuffleboard.

Well, what would you do with the $800 otherwise? Is it a lot of money to you?

$800 could get you eat out/eat in/eat better than the resort food options all weekend, and a lot of fun closer to home. Team home!

There are lake rentals available, but I doubt we’d use them. Not sure about fishing but we aren’t into that. I think the weekend would be more about connecting without the usual “home” distractions. This place was just close-ish with nice amenities.

Probably nothing, that’s the issue. We’d probably spend the weekend doing the same things we always do.

This is my thought, but I doubt we will do anything special if we stay home, that’s my hang up.

Sounds nice and easy. I'd go for a change of scenery and pace.

I have really increased our travel now that DCs are teens/tweens for the "connecting" you mentioned. If we're home, then everyone is off doing their own thing or making plans with friends. Travel is really when DCs spend the most uninterrupted time together as siblings.

OP here. This is exactly how I feel. I think my issue is that I can't believe it’ll cost me $1000 for a weekend like this and wish I could reproduce it at home for less, but I know it’ll never work.

Very few weeks in the US are really enjoyable.

Lakes not weeks

Where is this?? I’d like to go to a lake like this with those amenities for $800! This is a steal. Bring a bag of groceries so you can have fruit and snacks and drinks and wine without feeling guilty. You’ll have a great time and make memories and not regret it. You'll wonder why you ever asked.

$800 is a lot! Can you book a cheaper place?

I'm normally very pro take the trip, but that's going to be at least a $1k weekend. If that isn't a major blow to your finances, it sounds SUPER FUN. You can always reign in the spending over summer and build it back.

Also, look at bringing groceries/drinks/snacks for your hotel. Will there be bonfires? Bring hotdogs and marshmallows. Bring snacks for the kids who will inevitably complain about being hungry.

For 3 night?!? Unless you’re camping, how could you pay less.
