Considering whether to enroll DC in
Online or in person at AOPS for Algebra 2.
Kindly share your experiences. DC has been attending classes at the Vienna center here till now.

DS likes the AOPS Vienna/Tysons in person classes. At least he now actually wants to go to these math classes and see people vs. during covid he hated virtual enrichment classes.

If they're enjoying the in person classes, why are you considering switching? There's also a big difference between AoPS online and AoPS virtual campus.

My kids preferred online shopping because it involved less travel time.

I think it depends on the teacher. Who is teaching the inperson class?

It depends on the child. DS moved to RSM because he wanted to be in person and not have a 40 minute commute, that was 4th grade.

He is in 6th grade this year and taking the RSM National Math Competition Program online, it is the only way it is offered, and loving it. He said yes to re-enrolling as soon as we asked. He is trying the AoPS online math competition class this summer, we will see how he likes it.

DS prefers in person because he likes being with other kids who are good at math and enjoy math. It could be that he really wanted the in person experience in 4th grade because we had just come out of COVID. It could be that he was less confident with being good at math in 4th grade and wanted that social acceptance that it was fine to be good at math. Either way, different kids have different needs and learning styles. Ask your child their preferences and go with that.

New poster here. We are considering moving to online as well. We've been very happy with the in person classes at AoPS but our schedule is just too chaotic with sports to make the times work. Anyone have recommendations for the online instructors?

We made the transition a few years ago, it didn't work out for us. My DC was in the Vienna campus for two years happily, we changed to the online campus due to hectic sport scheduling. He did not enjoy the online text-based class and we had to drop it after two sessions. I would suggest sticking with in-person classes if possible.

When DC was in ES, the online virtual classes were suitable, but by the time they were doing intermediate algebra, they were even happier with the online text-based classes.

I believe the video-based AoPS virtual campus summer class would be better than the text-based AoPS online summer class.

Kid will attend TJ and will have homework and long commute so weekday classes are not practical.
DC likes the in person so we will continue in person on weekend.

Taking a whole Algebra 2 class on top of TJ Algebra 2 seems redundant. I know AOPS adds enrichment, but you can get that part from the competition classes.

Online text based class is a waste of money, and they are expensive. Dropped AoPS altogether.

I have to differ on 30% of the virtual online class. My kid liked those, but they are taking intermediate-level courses. I don't think it would go over well with ES kids.
