I went to a ped neurologist for exactly this.

Neurologist said ignoring them/not drawing attention to them, they are normal to onset around 5-7 years of age.

Not at all meant to scare you, just sharing our story.

However, our neurologist ordered an EEG to be on the safe side because my child described things sounding like auras, which the doctor said could be related to tics.

After multiple abnormal EEGs, my kid is now on anti-seizure medication.

If you do mention anything to your son, I would gently ask if he feels anything related to the tics (my kid describes them as feeling like ocean waves across their chest which leads to the tics).

Definitely don't say things like, "why are you doing that/whatever the motion is" or "stop doing that" etc.

Is it bothering your DS and disruptive to their lifestyle?
If not, maybe consider just recognizing that our bodies move in different ways throughout the day.
If it is really impacting day to day function you could try Tic Helper, which is an online CBT approach and works well if your DS is old enough and dedicated to regular practice.
There are meds that can help, although not eliminate, the tics.

My DD basically grew out of them. She has a few that she completely masks and no one would ever know. She is 14 now. The worst age was 9/10/11. Like others say, ignore them. Talk to teachers to give them advanced notice, but most are so used to kids with tics. It’s shockingly common.

op - yes it is bothering him, enough that he asked for therapy. we got him a therapist BUT we are in nyc and all the tic specific therapists are completely booked. this therapist says she works with tics, but isn't one of the 'ones' who is 'known' for doing so. I am thinking that therapy is a good idea nonetheless and if this is what inspires him to do it then great. but also concerned that if it's not a very specific therapy then it wont 'work' for this.

Throat clearing this time of year could be allergies. Constant postnasal drip can cause that.

Largely this, but when the throat clearing and squeaking got to a point where it was bothering classmates we tried having her take a small sip of water each time. The goal wasn’t to soothe her throat but to give her a different response to the need to do something. At 21 DD still sometimes tics but much less.

Oh, and sleep and general physical and mental wellness!

Magnesium Glycinate dramatically reduced my daughter’s tics.
