My 86 year old mom is quite sharp, thankfully, but suffers severe mobility issues that are worsening quickly. She spends 95%+ of her time each day in her home, on the couch watching tv and on her ipad. I can tell she is becoming depressed from the lack of social interaction, yet I live across the country so am unable to help much other than during my visits.
She loves to learn, especially about history. Are there any online adult resources similar to Outschool (which is for kids) that offer interesting but not too involved classes in areas of interest? Thank you for any info you can share. |
The Great Courses - available through her library for free, likely. It’s not classes but like documentaries.
The Smithsonian offers online classes on various history/art topics too. Small fee for those. |
These are excellent suggestions. Thank you PP! I will look into them. |
What area?
I know Chevy Chase has "Chevy Chase at Home" which is an aging-in-place organization that offers a lot of Zoom lectures. Montgomery County library system offers a lot of virtual events as well. |
My mom is not local. She is in FL, but thanks to your post I will look into her local library system to see what might be available. Thank you! Even more, does anyone know of good online communities available? Sort of like an online book club? |
AARP has some online book clubs through their "senior planet" organization:
https://seniorplanet.org/articles/online-book-club/ |
Meetup has online groups on a number of subjects: book clubs, travel, history etc |
Udemy has thousands. Also linked in. |
MOntgomery college offers a life long learning institute. Cheaper if you live local and open to all via zoom. |
