| My DC graduating HS 2026 is aiming for T20 and has nice ECs , grades and hopefully SAT, however during covid times quit piano and due to chronic knee injury quit dance and ice skating, they do a one season HS sport but no arts-no music/visual art and no dance...I see all the Ivy admits had a strong art presence in their ECs-awards, time and so on. Anyone have a kid recently get into T20 with no artsy spike? Is there anything they can do now to overcome that? |

Many of my son's classmates were admitted to T20s this year. With the exception of an aspiring director going to Northwestern, and a poet going to Cornell, literally none of them have any kind of arts presence.
So just do your thing. |
| college applications do not comprise a checklist of things to do! dc should focus on what they're good at and like to do. it is as simple as that. of course not every single accepted student will pursue something in the arts. that's just insane |
| My kids go to T20s. They are both completely artless. |
Knee replacement? Piano dropout support group, incorporated as a non-profit? |
I doubt that! |

Sounds like a Tiger Mom post. Anytime ice skating is mentioned.
If anything, you should be happy your kid is not just another mediocre piano (or violin) playing ice skater applicant. Colleges don’t want more of those. |
It’s a wannabe. A real Tiger Mom would never let a kid quit piano during COVID — and now the kid’s life is ruined. |

So I would have said nah. Not a big deal.
Except I noticed that month that every senior in our high schools choir /acapella group… (Private non-DMV) is going to a top 25 school. Many have “hard” /stem majors. my theory is that like any other student involvement this one involves another teacher, the music department, who can vouch for your involvement in the coins ry LOR review/teacher recs (all teachers would see the performances anyway and know the impact). Since schools want to see very involved students on their campuses who take advantage of the opportunities in front of them, this is one more way to showcase that. If your kid has an interest, do it. Find one arts EC at the HS. Make sure other teachers know about it. |
Ice skating isn’t artsy. |
Ivy's want either an artsy spike or clearly showing you will be a connoisseur of the arts they do offer..its the whole "upper crust" lifestyle |
