How do high school senior academic and book awards get announced?

Did parents receive a letter in mail? Does it tell you which award? Is there a similar thing in middle school?

An end-of-year awards ceremony, usually

Letter in mail to attend senior awards night. It did not say which award.

I don’t think middle school usually does same thing but this probably varies by school.

Our high school has an awards night (combined for all students, but obviously seniors are over-represented). Students who are getting an award are asked to attend and their parents are invited by mail, without prior notice about which award. They even split the night into two halves and let everyone know which half to attend (or if they should stay for the whole night).

What’s a book award?

Discretionary award given by school. "Best Biology student" ,"Most Improved", etc

Named so because the winner traditionally receives a book.

In my experience, book awards are the awards given in the name of a college or university from a local alumni group. I was a the Smith College book award winner from my high school back in the day, "presented each year by Smith alumnae clubs around the world to high school students who exemplify "the academic achievement, leadership qualities and concern for others that characterize Smith College alumnae." Schools pick their award winner.
