Ubers won’t take I-66

Anonymous
How can I get my Uber to take I66? Twice they’ve told me that it’s HOV 3 and they can’t charge the toll fees to Uber. It’s making my commute 40 min longer each way (60 min extra this morning) Is this true? Why can’t they charge me toll fees through the app?

Dumb question but I work and live near Tysons so I never have to take I66 during rush hour. I’m in meetings downtown all week in DC.

They just don’t want to. They told you as much. Now you plan accordingly.

I took several Ubers while FL and they were able to charge me for the tolls. My receipt shows a base fare, plus 3 separate tolls, and a booking fee. So, maybe it's the driver that doesn't want to go on the toll versus its not allowed by Uber.

I mean I’m paying and I would gladly pay more? Surely in that extra 45-60 min they could have gotten another fare.

I’ve wondered if this is a scam?

Buy a car.

Doubt Uber can calculate how much tolls are when I-66 HOT lanes have surge pricing. It doesn’t show up on my E-ZPass account until several days later. How will Uber know how much to charge you on the spot?

Book a car service. They don't care.

Uber/Lyft in NYC will charge you for the toll if you are taking a bridge or tunnel.

I wonder if their reluctance is based on the fact that they are not using their own car or are driving on someone else's account.

Its because the pricing is variable and Uber doesn't have a way to factor that into their pre-determined fare rate they show you. I sometimes am able to convince the driver to take it with the promise (which I follow through on) of providing them a tip that covers it, plus an actual tip.

Now, finding driver who actually have the toll tag in their car, that's a separate problem. It always amazes me for the ones in this area who don't have one.

Maybe offer extra cash?

Yeah, this was a huge fail in making the inside-the-Beltway portion of 66 HOV-3. When it was HOV-2 this was not an issue bc teh Uber driver plus you met the free requirement.

We should raise this to our legislators - need something like an Uber/taxi exception.

I think a lot of these independent operators don't have the ezpass. Use a regular taxi like Red Top, they drive 66 all the time.
