Least Expensive Sport

I was having this conversation with friends and we were discussing what would be the lowest cost sport, assuming you are going beyond the rec level - so you are paying for coaching. My thought was running because the equipment is minimal (compared to hockey for example), you can do it almost anywhere (don't need to pay for field, ice, court time) and you are competing against the clock which is often available in all areas (i.e. minimizing travel). I know ALL sports can get $$$$$ at some point of course, wondering what others think.

I agree with track. Especially since most (all?) public HS around here are no cut on track, so get lots of practice time through HS.

Yup, this was my thought also. And at least in our county they added middle school cross country and are adding middle school track as literally the only middle school sports available. So it's the only thing you can do free through school in 7th and 8th.

At a rec level sure, but beyond that absolutely not.

The sports that are no-cut in high school or sports that many kids don’t start until middle school or high school. Track, cross country, tackle football, wrestling etc.

Reason being: in all the other sports, parents will always pay for lessons or travel teams to give their kids an edge- which somewhat forces everyone else to follow, if they want their kid to keep up.

I don't think of year round swim teams as particularly cheap. Not sky high expensive, but not cheap.

The county run ones are pretty reasonable

Track
Soccer is relatively inexpensive

Club basketball is way cheaper than club swimming! But my basketball player also runs and xc/track is definitely cheaper than any of the other sports we've come across.

Basketball. Individual sports like running and tennis that sound like they would be cheaper end up requiring individual coaching if your kid is serious. Whoever said swimming either doesn't have a swimmer or doesn't know what other sports cost. Club swimming is second only to volleyball among common sports.
