Since STEM is now STEAM,

- shouldn’t the AAP evaluation also include evaluation of a prospective students’ art portfolio as an additional pathway into AAP ?

They repeatedly state in the model AAP presentation (not sure if it's still on the website, but it was a couple of years ago) that AAP is an academic program, so please don't include art work samples unless they have an academic connection.

So no.

Take a look at the new HOPE scale. Your wish is granted.

It's odd that a program would try to place some sort of wall of separation between "academics" and "art", as though the one has nothing to do with the other. Disappointing.

Nope, my oldest is a very talented artist and the feedback I got from the AART was that the artwork I submitted would be disregarded by the committee.

AART praised DC's art as being on par with Michelangelo, but noted that it's the Advanced Academic Program, not the Advanced Arts Program. It was worth a shot. Now, it's back to the boring math worksheets.

Thank you PP! Yes, that is exactly what I wanted to hear.

Please that FFX schools have fully embraced STEAM in their admissions to the AAPs.

In case anyone didn’t clic on the web link, it also says on that AAPs form:

World Languages ☐ Visual Arts
☐ Performing Arts

This is personally important for us.

Because while DD has really struggled with math and English, she is an excellent artist for her age cohort, and I feel AAPs is the program she really deserves.

Not sure if serious...

STEM was not being inclusive, that's why it had to become STEAM.

I remember hearing about this change to the acronym when my youngest was an infant. So at least 13 years ago. It's not a new thing. But I don't know if it's gaining or losing steam, lol.

STEM is not, nor ever will be, STEAM. That’s just a sop to parents of non-science kids who want their own acronym.

I agree. AAP gives you advanced math and maybe some slightly harder work/less support on projects in language arts, social studies, and science. They expect more depth in research and writing. Being an excellent artist won't help you there a bit.

Without the A, many colleges won't take a look at you. They want to see it all.
