I just can’t manage to eat less

“You can’t outrun the fork…”

I am nowhere near overweight but I have a HUGE appetite. If I don’t eat a substantial, satiating breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a snack in between, I get HANGRY.
If I skip a meal or try intermittent fasting I get migraines, or I just can’t function at work.

For what it’s worth, I’m very active. I used to be an elite distance runner, now I do more strength and resistance training and go on long backpacking treks every weekend. But I eat more it seems than even my athletic peers. I’m 5’4 and usually in the low 120s. I look fine, I just know this is going to catch up with me with age. I just don’t know how to eat less. I eat good food for the most part, plenty of veggies and protein and it’s not all carbs and crap, I just can’t not be hungry. It blows my mind how people can be offered food for free at an event and take modest bites of it or turn it down. I’m like, “free food? Less groceries to pay for myself? Let me at it!”

I’m concerned because there are general links to eating less and longevity, and it does seem that the long term answer to health is moderation, not eating a ton and then working out intensely. Plus, what if I get injured. But do some people just have turbo-charged metabolisms and have high caloric needs?

Sounds like a real problem

Then you need to change WHAT you eat. Instead of a slice of bread, grab a handful of grapes.

I mean, you're thin and very active. You're hungry because your body is requesting calories that it needs. You are lucky that your metabolism works so well. Some people have that level of appetite when they are fat and sedentary.

Are you sure the research says being sedentary and not eating anything is better than being active and eating a lot? I'm fairly confident it's the opposite. Old thin people who don't exercise and don't eat enough have little muscle mass and are more prone to falling. Then, once they fall, it's pretty much over for them because it's so hard to recover given their age and general weakness, and they lose the rest of their muscle mass due to having to rest for an extended time.

Second, if you get injured, you won't be able to exercise and your appetite will naturally slow down after a few days. You're not going to balloon.

Why are you trying to eat less?

120lbs at 5'4" is not thin. That's just normal to getting on the heavy side. Especially with what OP is talking about.

Start weighing your portion sizes, then remove 1/3 and see if that helps too. Eat on smaller plates or bowls.

Try a semiglutide. They make you stop wanting to eat.

OP is a normal weight with normal BMI. No need for semaglutide.

I am sure that OP looks great. I am 5’2” and 125 and I am far from heavy. In case you missed the memo, strong is the new skinny.

Don’t borrow trouble, OP. Your weight is perfect, you eat good foods and you exercise a lot. You do not have a problem.

Mind over matter. Join Weight Watchers or go on drugs.
