August in Maine- Tips?

Anonymous
We are thinking of traveling to may for the last week of August. Any suggestions? I haven't been in many years. Suggestions of where to stay or best towns to visit?

We’ve been looking as well. I can’t believe how expensive Maine is in the summer. Seems like we need a big budget for family of 5. Is it worth it?

It depends what you seek in this trip. Hiking? Water sports? Are nice restaurants important? Do you want to plant in one place or make a few stops? Real beach or just access to water? Lake or ocean/bay?

My suggestion without knowing the answer to those questions is Boothbay area. Lots of hotels, resorts and air bnb’s- plenty of restaurants - good kayaking and paddleboarding - nice botanical gardens - lots of cute towns in midcoast so you can drive for daily excursions - and the drive to midcoast Maine isn’t quite as hellish as to say Acadia.

You’re thinking of it ? Have you tried to check accommodations? Maine is probably booked up this late. I can’t imagine much is still available.

Yes it's worth it. The hiking, the Ranger Programs, the lobster and blueberries, all worth it. We don't like staying in Bar Harbor (too touristy), there's tons of other great locations on MDI

Look at Harpswell and the “burbs” outside Portland.

Is it? Maybe if you reserve late. Last summer we rented a cute little house for 5 people in Bar Harbor for a week for about $2000. Was in easy walking distance of downtown and was very comfortable.

DP. I looked a couple of weeks ago, and there was a surprising amount of availability. I keep hearing that bookings on STRs are down, so maybe it's true in Maine, as well. Also, there are many schools that start back in August, so the last week of August is usually not as booked. The last long weekend that includes Labor Day does get booked up, but you can often find availability if you're willing to leave on Friday.

As for the expense question, the cheaper houses get booked up first, and the more expensive stuff sits.

It's a big state. What are your ages and interests.

It's beautiful but starts to get cold by the 2nd week of August. Not snow cold, but it will feel surprising if you're expecting muggy summer nights.

Do you want to be by the ocean?
Hike?
Stroll a cute town?
Be near a lake?
Go antiquing?

I like the area near Rockland and Camden, but wouldn't want to stay right in town. It's easy to go to Acadia for the day, the beach, etc., and close enough to cute towns and restaurants that you won't be at an isolated house cooking meals 3x/day. Damariscotta is nice, too. You can plan one day in Bar Harbor to get it out of your system but I wouldn't want to stay there.

Agree. Midcoast is wonderful.

Despite many years on this forum, I still don't understand what people do for an entire week in Maine besides hike, wear sweatshirts and eat lobsters and blueberries.
