When does middle age start?

| I am 40. I keep forgetting I am this old. When I am with my mom (68) and grandma (88) I keep thinking my mom is middle age and my grandma is elderly and I am a young adult. Then I realize it’s probably more like I am middle age, my mom is elderly and my grandma is super old! |

You ARE middle aged, according to life expectancy. Elderly begins at 65, and late elderly 75+. |

| I think of middle age as starting at 40. I'd say 65+ is leaving middle age and entering "senior citizen." |

I think it starts at 40 but it used to start earlier (more like 35 or 36). Life expectancy has gone up, plus people shifted marriage and kids to later in life, which I think impacts this.
My mom was middle-aged at 35, but I didn't even have kids when I was 35 (they came very soon after, but still). |

| My 80 year old dad thought he was middle aged until recently. I, at 46, broke it to him that it was impossible for both of us to be middle aged at the same time. We cracked up laughing. |
