Goalie Save %

What do you think a good save % for a High School Goalie is?

Would that differ from public vs private?

Above 60% is really good. Public, private, college, any level.

It depends on competition, number of shots, etc. For a public playing good competition, a decent average is around 50% (47-53%) over course of season. Good goalies will usually be higher than that over a season. Once it gets down around 40% at a public, teams probably want to play you.

I would say drop about 3-5% off all of those numbers for privates playing good comp.

IMO the save percentage is not just about the goalie, there a lot of other factors, such as how good your defense is and how good the other team’s offense is. If a goalie has a high save percentage then the defenders in front of him are probably very good.

Good goalies also make their defenses good by being in the right position to take away easy shots. Teams are going to get shots off. Key is the goalie to make them work for it.

Thanks Langley goalie dad.

Save percentage is meaningless without more context. A better measure is the number of saves per game. Over 10 saves then goalie had a good game.

I call BS on the Langley stats. They’ve given up 79 goals. No way she has a 84% rate unless she has only played about 1/3 of the time and the backup sucks or faces 50 shots a game. Neither of which is true from watching a few of their games against good comp and I know Wakefield et al is not getting 50 shots a game.
